Tunguska is probably right. The H. Ms. Gelderland was used in 1911 to ferry some Dutch Royal to the UK so the battle ship must have contained a state room of sorts. Also, the picture behind Kruger is attached at four points, something typical onboard a ship.

Thank you Mr. V, though not visible in the photograph, the Rijksmuseum has Kruger's chair used during the trip, in their collection.

Kruger's last view of Africa, accompanied by his bodyguard, Lt Col Manie Bredell.
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

Gents, as an afterthought. Is it possible that the picture of Kruger was taken on the train which took him to Lorenco Marques? Kruger is known to have travelled in the private carriage of T.W.L. Steinmetz, the head of traffic of the NZASM. I noticed that the barometer is not only suspended from a spring but also attached to four springs at the bottom. This setup looks to me more like a shock absorber suitable for a rattling train than something that is supposed to counter the slow tilting of a large vessel. Also, if I see correctly, the heavy table and leather chair don’t seem to be anchored to the floor, something that would be required on a ship. Ideas?

Thank you EFV, noted, do you perhaps have a photo of the original typical interior of Kruger's or a NZASM 1st class carriage for comparison? Still inclined to the Gelderland theory, for two reasons. In the onboard, posed group photo, Kruger is also sporting those white loafers. Refer also a photo of the cabin interior, annotated on the verso 'Bloemstuk aangeboden aan H.M. Gelderland te Marseille 1900 na de reis met President Kruger’.

The definitive answer: the photograph was taken on the Gelderland.
This image in the Transvaal Archive has the caption: "Pres Kruger se verblyf aanboord Gelderland voorkajuit" (Pres Kruger's accommodation aboard Gelderland - forward cabin).

In Rob's photograph, President Kruger is sat at the table on the left. The barograph can just be seen on the wall at extreme left.
