I believe the photo was taken onboard the the Dutch cruiser, De Gelderland, ca October 1900, en route to Europe.

Attached, taken shortly before, the last posed studio (J & M Lazarus, Lourenco Marques) photograph of Kruger on African soil, taken at Lourenco Marques in October 1900 (shortly before his departure on tn 20 October, 1900), presumably on the stoep of the Governor's (Joaquim José Machado) mansion.

This makes complete sense. I couldn't work out why the barograph (top right) was suspended by springs. On a ship, such a construction would be needed to stop the pen from moving with the boat.

There is another photograph of Kruger on board the Gelderland (published in "Protected Cruiser Gelderland", p.37), which shows him wearing the same flat cap as that on the table in Rob's picture.
