Hi all

Another interesting unit on a Queens medal - Serjt W H John Maritzburg Amb. Corps with bars Natal, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 and 1902. The 3 last look like they have been added later.

Is this the Pietmaritzburg Ambulance. Interesting that the name could be shortened to the local name for the town or is it another town? I find no reference to this unit anywhere. Is there a roll for them or is it part of another roll.

Any help will be appreciated

I have a copy of the 1-page QSA roll : unfortunately the WO100 reference does not show.
John checks out for the Natal bar (all men only received that) : he must have seen subsequent service to earn the rest.
I have a QSA bar Natal to Pte Beresford of the unit.

Did some more digging : it is the last page of WO100/225.

Yes : Pietermaritxburg.

19 on roll : some seem to have been issued off other rolls.

Is there any reason that its the shortened naming of Pietermaritzburg. the school in the area is called Maritzburg College - is there any connection?

I was born in Maritzburg and, like other full-, part- and one-time residents of this city, refer to it only as 'Maritzburg' for reasons of laziness and convenience. Most official references require 'Pietermaritzburg', but there are exceptions, such as Maritzburg College.
