Hello Andy,
I echo Paul's welcome, I very much like and admire the conduct of the 1st Devonshire Regt, not just at Elandslaagte, but, throughout the whole war, they were really quite magnificent.
At Elandslaagte they were originally the reserve for the Manchester's however when the Boer line started to change, they were ordered to form for attack, they ended up in open ground for about three hours, with nothing but ant hills, whilst under a very incessant fire from the Boers the whole time.
They occupied the Boers positions that cold night, moreover, it was freezing cold, before returning to Ladysmith the following day, to, it has been suggested, a very rousing reception.
Again welcome Andy and good hunting, I hope you find that medal one day, it is not a common thing.
Regards Frank

Hello Andy,
Men did often transfer, but, I would think not as often from the cavalry to the infantry, having said that, life in the Corps of Hussars was far from an easy one, whilst they were an elite formation, the work was long and hard, you had the extra burden of having a horse and all the additional kit to look after.

Hi Paul/Frank

Here is the only Photo of my great Great Grandfather Spencer Streeter wearing his uniform {Seated left} with family( my two great aunts and great Uncle}, photo taken about 1911, I believe he was then a postman in Nutley, also in the photo is his brother Edward with his family, Not sure if Edward was also in the Boer war though I do know he spent much of his life in the Army stationed in India and back at the Woolwich barracks.

Kind regards Andy
