Meurig,

That is annoying and unexpected.

The same may have happened to me also. I lodged a bid of £650 on 16 Feb and thought I had won it when it hammered for that price. I presumed someone must have submitted a bid earlier than mine but I will ask DNW what happened in this instance.

..and illogical. Judging from the response to my post on the BMF a number have been caught out and are unhappy. Spinks do it as well.

Lot 810 (Adams, SALH, Elandslaagte) was the very first Elandslaagte in my collection. I soon got rid of it. It had travelled before it got to me, and it has clearly done more travelling since then.

Brett,

I remember being very excited at the listing of a QSA with Talana and Elandslaagte to the SALH, excited that was until I checked him on the rolls!

At other auctions I have had the same result, losing an item when it sells at my high bid. I was told they enter your bid within the increments, depending what order you are as a bidder you could have the auction house bid for you say 600, then the other bid goes at 650, no more bids, you lose though your high bid was 650.
Some auction houses have fixed this problem by bidders authorization to allow one bid increment higher than your high bid in an instance such as this.
Some time back I had bid on and won 2 swords and there would be savings on shipping and selling the one would pay for the other. However a tie bid lost me the second sword, ouch!

Having missed a very nice BSACM/QSA pair some time ago with a certain auction house (due to my bid being lodged after the identical "winning" bid), I never get too excited about my bid at any auction until I get the notification of payment due. Seems the best course.
