Congratulations to those who were successful in the DNW auction.

I managed to secure the QSA clasp Natal to Pte. Fowler of the Gloucesters. The catalogue neglected to record that he was taken POW (and presumably also wounded) at Nicholson's Nek and died of wounds as a POW at Waterval POW camp.

I also secured the QSA clasps DoL & OFS to Pte. Belcher, also of the Gloucesters. He was a bad lad, being court martialled 3 times. The catalogue bafflingly stated that he became clour sergeant of the Bedfords in WW1 when in fact he served in the UK with the Gloucesters and West Kents before being discharged medically unfit in 1916. Unusually he attested again and served in France in with the Labour Corps in 1919 before once again being discharged unfit. The QSA is his only medal entitlement.

I was very keen to win the SAC medal to Cpl Campbell but alas.
Who was the lucky buyer?
I believe I was succesfull with the bid for lot 211 the pair to Pte Penn Coldstream Guards with all the bars issued for the Western front and probably also a survivor of battle of Magersfontein?
What a wonderful variety of medals and medal groups.

David, I was left trailing in your wake on Fowler's medal. Someone else must have spotted that glaring cataloguing miss to bid against you.

I don't think Fowler would have been wounded to be POW, the Gloucesters surrendered.

There are about 80 POW deaths up to June 1900, so a scarce medal. I have one to the Northumberland Fusiliers, who is only recorded as dying in Pretoria in February 1900. He was probably captured at Stormberg.
