Thanks David......

I should have put my question here rather than in your thread about Wepener, sorry....

The reason that I was asking is because I have the set of medals shown herein (both Hammond and McGregor)and the name of one of the men on the stone is miss-spelt..... I have contacted the Canadian Government and they said that it is C.W.G.C. responsibility but as you have stated it only cover WW1, WW2 and Korea(Canadian Branch)..... I wrote them another letter but have not had a reply yet.....

The name should read HAMMOND not HAMNIOND......

I have responded to the query under 'Wepener'. Perhaps David can move it to its correct place here and delete this entry.

In my earlier reply under the'Wepener' thread, I wrote that I believed the CWGC had assumed responsibility for the maintenance of Boer War cemeteries and monuments in South Africa.

A friend who is involved in the recording of military graves has written to say that the CWGC did indeed take over "ABW grave care" about two years ago. He went on to write "...in my opinion they bit off more than they can chew, but taking into account the collapse of the local heritage organisations, perhaps it was the best option ... or sadly the only option .....!!!"

This development is a sad indictment of the situation in South Africa. On the one hand, there is strong official support for the tourist industry, which is an important contributor to the local economy, while at the same time there is indifference and neglect of an important focus for tourists visiting the country.

The KwaZulu-Natal Branch of the South African Military History Society attached to their current newsletter a document detailing the CWGC involvement with Boer War sites.

I tried without success to attach it here and instead I will try forwarding it to David who, unlike me, knows what he is doing.

Brett,

The newsletter would not upload because it exceeded the maximum file size. I have now increased this limit.

Best wishes
David
