Thank you Neville, I have never seen this before. Haig was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel on 17 July 1901.

I'm having trouble finding a photograph of him as a Major, as he was when he was Major General John French's Staff Officer during the Colesberg Operations.

I have this photograph of Haig taken while he was on General French's Staff. Not sure of the date.

Army Order 28a, dated 21 February 1900, states that "Major D. Haig, 7th Hussars, is granted the local rank of Lieutenant-Colonel". So, he would have worn lieutenant-colonel rank insignia from that date.

This promotion reflects that fact that he was appointed Assistant Adjutant General on General French's Staff on 20 February 1900 (Army Order 32, 3 March 1900).

Well thank you again Neville.

I clearly had the wrong date recorded, so that information is helpful and you have kindly shared yet another photograph I haven’t seen before. Where is this from and can you identify the others?

He looks a serious chap doesn’t he.

Ian,

Both photographs are in my collection. The only other officer I have identified is Capt Sir John Peniston Milbanke, V.C., the man standing at the back behind General French, with peaked cap.

A second photograph in the same album shows Milbanke in conversation with French. As far as I can remember both images were published in Colliers Weekly.

Thanks again Neville, this is very much appreciated as always.

I plan to use information from Haig’s diaries which give excellent detail in my Colesberg Operations book and later the Oxley diaries (Previous forum conversation) Oxley was one of Clements’ Staff Officers as I’m sure you know.
