Hello Iain,
Yes the start is a little heavy going after reading my last book!
Will stick with it though because it does come well recommended, be interesting to see which one of us finishes first!

while I was waiting for "Ladysmith" to arrive, I started Thomas Pakenham's book and enjoying it. I've got through the politics at the beginning dealing with Lord Milner, and now the retreat from Dundee has just taken place. You remember I was inquiring about the cover picture!
The battle of Elandslaagte has just been won and Mournfull Monday underway!

I'm afraid I have to finish this now before I start on Ladysmith! B)

regards,

Iain

Hi Paul,
yes, it is worth plodding through the politics and it isnt that boring. :woohoo:
I only really get an opportunity to read at the weekends but with us reading parallel, there may be points for discussion as we move along.

Iain

According to Packenham's book, the ILH were Known as the Imperial Light looters as they started looting Afrikaans farms in Natal in reprisal for the Boer forces looting English farms.
Also he uses part of the poem "the battle of Magersfontein" by Pte Smith of the Black Watch, as a foreward to chapter 18. I posted the full poem under miscellany on this forum a couple of months ago.

A new book obtained during my annual leave was "Thorneycroft's 'unbuttoned' ' The story of Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry in the Boer War 1899-1902 by Robin Drooglever. ISBN 978-0-9872045-0-9 and presumably copies may be obtained through the book's author at PO box 42, Bulleen, 3105, Australia.
TMI has long been a favourite of mine (along with CMR, ILH, FID) and this book is extremely useful. It contains a quite good series of chapters covering phrases of the war; together with a series of appendices including a nominal roll with biographical details where known. As a matter of interest, I was able to identify two QSA TMI recipients in my little collection as specifically being side by side at an action near the Sunday's River in 4/00.
Definitely recommended for the TMI collector.
