Hello everyone, I am new to this so forgive me for being ignorant! I went on an "expedition" today and found an item with a metal detector in a very secluded area. The area was a British stronghold during the Boer War. I have tried googling the item but have had no luck, it seems incomplete but seems to be brass. If the picture is not clear enough, there is a crown in the centre with an anchor on either side. I would guess it is British and am really very curious to know what it was. Other items found within 2 metres of this item were a bullet casing (kynoch 7mm), a bullet tip and a big needle as well as a oval brass plate.

Hi Karin,

I took the liberty of adding the picture into the body of the message to make it easier to see and hope you don't mind?

The piece is intriguing. Can you tell me it's dimensions please?

With thanks
David

Hi Mike,

The item was found outside of Smithfield (Free State) on un-developed land below a rocky outcrop. I have no idea if there were any naval personnel in the area, I don't even know if it relates to the Boer War, I just assumed it did because of Smithfield's involvement in the Boer War.

Hi Again Karin.....

The first thing that popped into my mind was an early 1800's "Shoe Buckle" but since you have now said that it may not be Boer War it makes me swing even more that way....
