Hi Frank,

It was the Town Guards and DMT's that enticed me into the world of QSA's in the first place. The 'infection' spread to local units and then to different clasp combinations and now I am beyond cure. I must admit that I didn't think that the TG's & DMT's were so sought after and have missed out on several 'must haves' at auctions. The bidding on the Town Rifle Associations is generally very vigourous.
Does anyone have the number issued for the Nottingham Road RA?
The scarcest TG I have is to the Malemsbury TG, by Gordon's only 17 issued.

Cheers,

Jim

Hello Jim,
I am really not into TG's DMT's and RA's but I can understand why people do like them, they are very interesting indeed and really had been too cheap for far too long.
I tend not to go with any transcribed material because of the usual errors, there are, from memory, around sixty men on the medal roll for the Malmesbury Town Guard in WO100/283, with some forty nine shown on the Nottingham Road RA in WO100/284, I'd have to look at both again to see if there is an actual number that could be given for those actually issued.
Kind regards Frank

Hello Jim,
In the case of the Malmesbury Town Guard, there is a note which says fifty three medals to the General Officer Commanding the Cape Colony, the date given is the 7th of March 1906.
A number of members of this unit had their particular medals issued from other units within Class C and Class D1 of the SAMIF as well as other Cape Colony Volunteer units that were not part of the SAMIF.
Kind regards Frank Kelley

Hi Jim

Apropos the Nottingham Road Rifle Association - I count 34 medals to them with an additional 9 on a Supplementary roll as having been omitted by the President, James King, the first time round. The rolls on Ancestry are hard to find because for some reason they are categorised as the Nottinghamshire Regiment.... in any event they are under WO100/284.

I have several medals either to this outfit or with a connection to it. One such example (on the supplementary roll) is to HM Stainbank however this medal was issued to the Colonial Scouts and not the NRRA. There are probably other such examples making it difficult to gauge the exact number which would be less than that on the roll.

Regards

Rory

Interestingly, there are two notes on the Nottingham Road RA roll, the first says 32 medals to Commandant of Militia Pietermaritzburg Natal and a second, similar, showing nine more.
There are forty eight names in total, though, Mason is shown twice, which is where my figure of forty nine came from, I would think that those names crossed out with imperial service, had gone on to join the Natal Volunteers.

I would agree. Take for example the Doctor, Gilchrist, his name is crossed through on the roll implying that further service was seen with an outfit which would have issued his medal.
