Thanks for the last lot of comments - all most helpful although I'm still rather bemused at the thought of Wilson being born in South Africa, going to work for an American newspaper in the 1890s, enlisting in TMI in 1900 for the A-B war, going back to America and yet returning to die in South Africa. And yet I don't think anyone has seen any of his A-B war cartoons or illustrations actually being published, have they?

If anyone doesn't think this is the right story, please say so! Otherwise iI will catalogue the screen and Wilson's contribution to it accordingly. Incidentally, and I know at least two of you think you have seen the screen before, I am quite sure it has never been published, and certainly not on eBay. This begs the question of whether there is another one somewhere....

Would anyone object to a general acknowledgement in my catalogue along the lines of 'We are grateful to several members of the AngloBoerWar.com forum for their help in cataloguing this lot'?

As I mentioned before this screen has I am sure come up for sale OR viewing before....just where I cannot place it! I might well have been mistaken regards eBay.

I'm sure David would be the best person to answer your last question.

Regards
Brian

What a fascinating topic! I think it has to be realised that citizens of the old Empire could and sometimes did travel very widely and had a hankering to see "where the strange roads go down". As Brian says, the style of the figures is very very similar (I got a laugh out of several of the cartoons on the US spot) and my very strong feeling is that he is "the man".

With renewed thanks to those who helped to identify W. O. Wilson as the likely artist, I just want to let members of the forum know that General Thorneycroft's screen will be offered as lot 414 in a sale at Holloway's, Banbury, on Tuesday 1 October.

This link will take you to the catalogue:
