There is a William Oliver Wilson on the Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry nominal roll, which might be a good starting point for further research. I googled the name and one possibility with that name was an Australian soldier in WWI. A number of Australians served in TMI during the Boer War.

Thank you, Brett. I had no idea how to get hold of the T.M.I. nominal roll but hoped someone else might be able to. I have always thought that W.O.W. was likely to have served with Thorneycroft and it seems highly likely that this is the one. I will pursue the line straight away, but is there any likelihood of finding Wilson's nationality? The Australian William Oliver Wilson I have found (which I presume is the one you found by googling) was 25 in 1915 and therefore too young to have served in the Anglo-Boer War. I have a subscription to Ancestry.co.uk but really need him to be British for that to help!

R W F Drooglever recently published a book on Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry. I have not seen a copy, but it is bound to be well researched and it might help in your search. If you are successful in your quest, I hope you will let us know.

Regards

Drooglever book shows W.O.Wilson as Pte, B Coy, 140200 to 11021901 in TMI with QSA six bars. No other service noted - so the talented artiste could well be him.

My thanks to those who have come up with suggestions. William Oliver Wilson does seems a likely candidate. I have got a copy of Robin Drooglever's book and have also exchanged emails with him. He knows no more about Wilson than what he has included in the roll at the end of the book. A website called forces-war-records.co.uk says Wilson was South African, but I do not know how reliable that is. Anyway, I have got enough to catalogue the screen for sale and am grateful for this site's prompt help. I will use it when we next have South African medals to sell!
