Has anyone come across a caricaturist with the initials W. O. W.? He is not in the book by Ryno Greenwall so I assume he was a soldier, but his work is of high quality and I have seen 27 individual drawings mounted in a floor screen.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

You have started with a very difficult question. In the past, I have not really taken any note of the initials that accompany caricatures.

Do you have an example of his work? When was it published? In which publications?

Kind regards
David

If I can work out how to attach images I will send some tomorrow. I have a small auction house in Banbury, England, and we have been asked to sell a mahogany floor screen which originally belonged to General Thorneycroft and which has descended in his family. The screen has three panels, each containing nine pen and ink caricatures in its upper part. They are good drawings, some humorous, but as I cannot find anyone with the initials W.O.W. working professionally at that time I am inclined to think the artist was a soldier who gave the drawings to Thorneycroft, who in turn had a kscreen made to hold them. So the short answer is that I don't think the artist was ever published.

Thorneycroft's floor screen sounds most interesting. I hope you do manage to post a picture of it. I expect that this item will attract many potential buyers.

If you would like to email the images to me at david.biggins [at] angloboerwar.com, I can upload them for you.

I, like Brett, would be very interested to see them.

Kind regards
David

These are the pictures of the full screen and then some individual panels.
