To quote from the information sheet given to me by the museum staff "The museum was officially opened on the 1st of July 1904, by the Colonel in Chief of the Yorkshire Regiment, as the Dorman Memorial Museum. It was presented to the town by Sir Arthur Dorman as a memorial to his son George Lockwood Dorman, and others of the Yorkshire Regiment who lost their lives during the South African wars of 1899-1902."

There's no foundation stone nor is there a plaque or anything else informing visitors of the history of the museum.

Thanks, Paul. It seems a shame that there's no mention at the museum of why it's a memorial museum.

That must be one of the largest memorials we have seen?

Morning Brett,

I remember visiting the museum as a schoolboy 50 years ago (I have been many times since then by the way)my school was only 5 minutes away.
I remember as a child being amazed by the displays of stuffed wild animals and in particular a male lion, which is still there today.
The museum has been updated over the years but still has a Victorian/Edwardian atmosphere in parts. It houses a good history of the local area.
The "memorial" part is because it was presented to the town by Sir Athur Dorman his son was a casualty he served with the Yorkshire Regt.
