Picked this up recently - anyone seen one before? No trace on the 'net or in contemporary newspapers.

Given to Pte 5171 Frederick Watson KRRC, came with KSA. He earned a QSA with the clasps: Bf,CC,OFS,TH,RoL,LN and an IGS with clasps Samana 1891 and Hazara 1891. This last medal was recently sold, I've asked the dealer to get in touch with the buyer.

It is from the village of Balderton, Nottinghamshire. I cannot trace a conventional memorial for the village.

Very, very nice. Looks like it was professionally printed; I wonder if it was a standard scroll, with the border and the red wording being the same on all, "The Inhabitants of Balderton...." being added for whichever place it was for, and the individual's name also being added.

Is there a printer's name below the lower border?

Hello Berenice

It is professionally done on board. I can't see a printer's name or any kind of date. I have worked out the Vicar was Alfred John Judson and he was appointed sometime between March 1901 and February 1902. Watson, himself, returned to the UK in May 1902.

I will need to find a local history studies centre covering the village to see if they have record in their archives. I am sure they would have made a fuss of Pte Watson's homecoming which was usually reported in the papers.

Unlike Mike's fine example to a particular unit I have no idea how many men this was awarded to.

Regards
Meurig

The IWM search engine brings up a plaque in Balderton church for an ABW casualty, but nothing in Newark itself. www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/27063

The local Newark Advertiser was being published in the early 1900s so Newark Library should have it on microfiche.
