What an extraordinary collection Paul.

I think I have only seen about a dozen "Siege of Ladysmith" ribbons in 45 years of collecting, and you have found over 30..!!

You've made my day Neville. The first time I have surpassed your amazing collection, albeit in a very small way!

Is the Powerful hat as worn by the naval brigade or a souvenir item do you think?

Regards
Paul

Paul,

The sennit hat is as worn by Powerful's Naval Brigade. However, its condition suggests that it was not worn on active service. I suspect it is one that was issued on H.M.S. Powerful's return from South Africa, to smarten the men up ready for their processions through London and Windsor.
It was purchased way back in the early 80s, when the Camden Passage area still had a good selection of miliaria shops.

Paul, for what it’s worth, I think you have a truly spectacular collection. Your selection of illuminated addresses is to die for. And your library is unsurpassed....

One of the green silk ribbons worn by British troops on St Patrick's Day, 1900.

"St Patricks Day. / March 17th, 1900. / Erin - go - Bragh"
"Worn by the British Troops. / South Africa / Mrch 17th 1900"

"Erin - go - Bragh" or "Éirinn go Brách" loosely translates as "Ireland Forever".
