This postcard shows the opening of the Hawick memorial on August 22nd 1903
Admirers of the ILH will already know Colonel John James Scott Chisholme ILH is remembered here.

Hello Paul,
This was certainly a impressive memorial, have you ever been to Hawick?
From memory, I think John Daykins was from there, he won the Victoria Cross!

I've been! (In 1997 and yes my pictures are on slide film.)

On the memorial between the soldier's legs is a machine gun - I think the first depiction of a machine gun a British war memorial. A pair of canon at the base of the memorial (one is visible) were not there when I visited.

The Chisholme family lived at Stirches in Hawick, he was the last Chisholme inhabitant. It is now St Andrew's Convent.
