Mmm, that James Harrison served in the Royal Flying Corps so it may be a different man. There are several JSHs serving in the Great War.

Thanks David,

I believe he went to County Durham after his return and may have died in a mining accident so not sure he made it as far as WWI - but I don't know for sure.

Last question is that I read that the campaign medal he would have received would have been the Queen's South Africa Medal and King's South Africa Medal? Is that correct? As I understand it the medal /s have long been lost in the mists of time so the only surviving heirloom is the photo of which my cousin in Australia has the other one.

Hugely appreciative of you taking the time today. What a wonderful gift you have given me in answering some of the questions about a photo I have had for 45 years.

Thank you and I congratulate you on this superb archive

Best
Michael

And my absolute last question would be, what does "QSA (5) Belm MR Drief Joh DH and KSA (2)" mean?

Now you are well within your rights to tell me to go and sling my hook!

James,

You're welcome. I have enjoyed the research challenge this morning.

Sorry for my abbreviations. He received the Queen's South Africa Medal with 5 clasps Belmont, Modder River, Driefontein, Johannesburg and Diamond Hill. He received the King's South Africa Medal with clasps South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902,

Best wishes
David
