Another source of information might be:

First or Grenadier Guards in South Africa, 1899-1902. Records of the 2nd Battalion compiled by Brig Gen F Lloyd, Records of the 3rd Battalion compiled by Brevet Major Hon A Russell. London, J Keliher & Co Ltd, 1907.

Michael,

If he's 7370, then definitely, yes!

That's really helpful.

As I understand it. He returned and went to the North of England where he became a miner. As I now recall he died in the UK and the family then emigrated to the Australia.

I think 7370 might not be a bad bet on who he was.

Really appreciate you taking the time to correspond. Would you be able to recommend a next step on what I should do next?

M

Michael,

Might his medals still be with the family?

Do you think he may have served in the Great War? He would probably have a new service number if so but a search of the MIC and pension papers could be enlightening.

You could search his local area to see if there is a local history society that might have some information.

He's probably unlikely to be mentioned in the regimental history but its worth a look if you can obtain a copy.

Lastly, I would write to the Guards Museum to see if they have any photos of the 3rd Btn in South Africa or any information on him. They may say all their biographical records are with the National Archives though.

Good luck!
David

Just searching the National Archives catalogue. There is a James Stanley Harrison who served as 2nd Lt in the Royal Fusiliers in the Great War. His papers are in Wo339/60787.
