Just a note to clarify his marital detail, WO97 suggests his first wife's surname was Adey, where as WO364 suggests Avey, I checked RG12, so I take Adey to actually be correct, she appears to have died on the 3rd of September 1910, both his wife's are clearly shown along with their children, he had married again in 1914 in Sheffield, the various names will doubtless be familiar to you.

Hi Mel / Frank and all,
Please see attached photo of my Grandfather (pen pointing to him) and what I,m sure are many more Sherwood Forester "Boer war" vetrans. This photo "my father told me" were of the chaps who were training new recruits for the 1st world war and was taken around 1915 outside Normanton barracks Derby or maybe Nottingham barracks? Can you possibly put names to any Mel and say if its Nottingham or Derby?
Bucknobs.

Thank you for the photo and I think we have it on file and yes I recognise several in the group including your grandfather. The CO in the centre second row is Colonel James Frederick Humby who was also an old Boer War veteran. I shall be away from my pc for a while but when I return I will give you more details then with regards to your picture.

.
Humby commanded the 54th (Ulster Imperial Yeomanry from February 1900 in the operation in the Orange Free State Feb to May 1900, operations in the Transvaal, East of Pretoria, July to 29.11.1900: operations in Orange River Colony and Cape Colony, 30.11.1900 to 31.5.1902. He was taken prisoner at Lindley with the 13th Battalion, but escaped 30.8.1900. Became Major in 1901, and commanded the 74th (Dublin) Imperial Yeomanry from June 1901 with the 8th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry from May 1902. Despatches twice, D.S.O., Queens Medal and Four Clasps, Kings Medal and Two Clasps.
