Hi everyone ... I'm yet another nubie.

I have recently commenced family tree research after 30 years of procrastination and I now have the bug.

Two days ago I learned that my grandfather (Alexander Boyes - Scots Guards) and his half brother (John McKerlie Grassie - Imperial Light Infantry) both served in the second Boer war and so here I am, writing a request for help in this forum.

Maybe someone has already researched them in detail or knows about them through their own family tree/research?

I would be very grateful for any stories/commentary/diary entries/MIDs/detail of awards etc. relating to either or both of them. Even a steer on how best to access/pull together information that is available would be very welcome.

Thanks all.

Stuart

Boyes service and discharge papers have survived in WO97 along with his medal entitlement, clearly shown on the same and also in WO100/165, at Kew, both are available on line, he served in South Africa in 1902 only, interestingly, he had joined the 3rd Battalion Scots Guards in 1900, but, his actual service in South Africa was with Number 2 Company Guards Mounted Infantry.
Grassie, was a founder member of the Imperial Light Infantry and his papers might have survived in WO126/55-65 at Kew, again his exact medal entitlement is clearly shown in WO100/252, most of these men were present at Spion Kop and had a bloody hard fight.

Thank you so much Frank - that's such a big help already. At this rate I'll know everything about my family tree by the end of the week ;-)

Hello again Frank ... I wonder if i might trouble you for a little more assistance.

Since your initial reply I have had eye surgery and I have only been able to research WW1 thus far because of the strain/tired eyes etc - could you help me to get the enlistment/service records and insights that you shared below?

"Boyes service and discharge papers have survived in WO97 along with his medal entitlement, clearly shown on the same and also in WO100/165, at Kew, both are available on line, he served in South Africa in 1902 only, interestingly, he had joined the 3rd Battalion Scots Guards in 1900, but, his actual service in South Africa was with Number 2 Company Guards Mounted Infantry.

Even if you could cut and paste some website links that would be a massive step forward. Any advice or guidance on how best to go about this would be most welcome.

Thank you.

WO97 is available whilst at Kew and online via FMP, generally speaking, WO126 is only available at Kew, odd transcripts can be found on line, on occasion, a manual search would be needed within WO126/55-65 in the case of Grassie.
WO100 is available whilst at Kew, almost all, though not all, is online via their own site and Ancestry.
