Thanks Mike.
The William Grassie to whom I refer was born in 1871, Closeburn, Dumfriesshire to father William and mother Agnes McKerlie, so unfortunately the record you shared can't be the right one.
Where might I look to investigate further and verify the suggestion that he served in Canadian forces?

Good Morning Stuart......

I looked at the enrollment documents of all the W. Grassie's who served in the Canadian Army during WW1...

You are so kind and truly helpful Mike - thank you once again.
What this shows me is that the assumptions on this side of the pond have gone wrong somewhere ... so back to square one.
I'll retrace the facts I have and pursue a different line of thought ... maybe through parish records.
It has been very educational!
