thank you Frank. I can't get to Kew so I'll pursue FMP for now. I am assuming that the snapshot you posted is my granddad's enlistment/service record taken from FMP so Ill find it.

Thanks Mike. I see :-)
Is there anywhere that would say where J McK Grassie resided upon discharge in Dec 1900?
My latest research suggests that he stayed on in South Africa, married and raised a child. He didn't return to UK until 1920s.
Was that possible? ... was that common?

WO127 confirms his actual dates of service in the ILI and that he was clearly a founder member as already mentioned.

Hi Stuart

John M Grassie passed away in the Transvaal (South Africa) in 1957 and was survived by his wife Catherine.

His archival reference is:

DEPOT TAB SOURCE MHG TYPE LEER VOLUME_NO 0 SYSTEM 01 REFERENCE 8173/57 PART 1 DESCRIPTION GRASSIE, JOHN MCKERLIE. STARTING 19570000 ENDING 19570000 REMARKS PREDECEASED SPOUSE CATHERINE GRASSIE.

You will have to work through a researcher to get his details. PM me and I will provide you with a reference.

Regards

Rory

Rory this is wonderful. I have no idea how you dug up what you did but thank you. You have cracked a puzzle for me.
Apologies for delay in response I have been travelling a lot over the last few days.
I may call on a researcher in due course but right now it is sufficient know what you have shared as I have other siblings to trace e.g J M Grassie's younger brother William. He emigrated to Canada and died in Vancouver in 1935 after allegedly serving in WW 1 in Canadian Cavalry. I find that tough to believe so where should I look to verify such ... Forces War Records maybe?

There are 6 William Grassie's who served in WW1......

Do you have a year of birth or place......

We have: Aberdeenshire, Oklahoma City (I guess we can forget him), Smithville Ont., Portage La Prairie Man., and Vancouver BC......

So it only looks like:
