If you do feel a sentimental attachment to it, you should keep it. I doubt that it would fetch much money, and the buyer would have no sentimental feeling for it. The flag is better off being loved a little than not loved at all!

Hi Ruth.....

It is policy that we do not value items as it may be $10.00 to one person and $100.00 to another and this can cause some bad feelings between member and possible seller....

Sadly, far too many seem happy to sell off the family silver. :(

Ruth,

I can confirm that General Piet de Wet rode into the picquet lines of the Volunteer Company of the Oxford Light Infantry at Kroonstad on 26 July 1900 and surrendered. I presume that the August date is the date of the gift to your great-grandfather.

Best wishes,

Justin

Thanks to Justin, your piece of flag has increased in monetary and historic value, and you have a way forward in researching the regiment that was likely involved in its acquisition. There is now even more reason to treasure it as a significant family heirloom.

Thank you Brett and Justin, I thought I had replied to you Justin but it isn't showing here ... So thanks for your help I have a museum in Australia talking to me about it now ... I can't see the point in it sitting in a box here and to no use I'd rather sell or donate it to someone who will get pleasure out of it ...

Kind Regards

Ruth
