Given the state of my eyes, I should not be making judgements in such instances, but I wondered if 'Mainwaring' might fit. Meurig's 'Register of the Boer War' gives the following officers:
Lieut (later Capt) W R K Mainwaring, Imperial Yeomanry
Major R Mainwaring, SAMIF & CinC's Bodyguard

One way of establishing a value would be to offer the item for sale on an Internet website. I do not normally follow such sales, but it is the modern way. I think you can withdraw it from the sale if you are not satisfied with the offers.

Thanks Brett I was just hoping to get some idea if it it valuable before deciding to sell it or keep it for sentimental reasons
