Hi guys

I am trying to find records for my great great uncle who served in the Boer War. Problem is that I knew nothing about him until yesterday. His name was Thomas Glynn, he was from Clough, Galway, Ireland and was born sometime in 1870 - 1877. and he was in South Africa in the Boer War. BUT I don't know which side he was on.
After the Boer War ended he stayed in South Africa but then moved to Australia. He was part of the Sydney Twelve - imprisoned but released.

Can anyone help me please? I have tried find my past and also ancestry. I have found two Thomas Glynns in the Boer War - one is listed as Australian (maybe he became an Australian citizen) and the other is listed as a Major. I don't think he is the Major as it would strike me people would have made much more of the fact a British Major was imprisoned, but I could be wrong. I would be very grateful for any help tracing him. I only found him as his half brother, Martin Glynn, was killed on the 29 Sept 1918 in France and I was investigating him. Thank you

The problem here is the lack of information, if you actually know his place of birth beyond reasonable doubt, then a date of birth should not be an issue, yet, from your post, clearly it is, could you tell us how you know he was in South Africa during the Anglo Boer War and in particular, why you believe he served in it?

Hi Frank

Thanks so much for coming back to me. I am trying to find his birth date. I know he was born in Galway, his sister Maria Glynn was born in 1877 (we believe she was younger - she is my great great grandmother). Glynn was a very common name in those parts.

This article mentions his service

www.workerseducation.org/crutch/pamphlets/onward/glynn.html

This article mentions him after the war www.nelsonmandela.org/omalley/index.php/...v02032/06lv02033.htm

I am going to find his birth date. Irish Civil records dont appear to have it and Ancestry and find my past are also not co-operating with me today LOL

He died in Botany Bay, Australia in December 1934

Okay, so it appears just second hand published source rather than any actual physical evidence or a family source, it is often difficult because you need to know where the information actually comes from in the first place and in the second if it is accurate, or not.
In the case of the British Army and SAMIF you will find there are not very many possible candidates, I was going to nominate a certain gentleman of that name in the Connaught Rangers, who, whilst was born in Galway, it appears he was born in Gort and about circa 1867 or so.
The obvious thing to do is establish your family tree first, beyond all reasonable doubt and move on from there, because you would not otherwise be able to examine any surviving papers without knowing exact family detail needed to say whether or not you have found the correct man

Yes, those were my thoughts, but as already mentioned he was born prior to 1870 and not in the same place as you stated in your original post, you need to establish a family tree.
