I am new, be gentle. Having served 35 years myself, I decided to follow up on the family story of at least one of three brothers who joined up in the 1890's. So far I have discovered that one, Thomas service number 4090 did a period in SA, hence my interest in this valuable source of information site. I am no historian, merely trying to get a better picture of all aspects of service back then and hopefully add Thomas with pride to the family tree. Thomas had a brother William and a brother Michael. It is said they also joined up but no proof yet. Regards etc etc

I can't help with Thomas or William Quigley, but a Michael Quigley, of Keighley, served in the East Lancashire (Militia) Regiment.

And welcome to the group.

Thank you BereniceUK. I wonder if Michael Quigley of Keighley originaly came from Ireland? All my relatives I am searching for are Irish born and British citizens at that time. I do have DOBs father mother names if there was a possibility he was from Ireland originally. If not, not to worry someone might know about 4090 Thomas Quigley. Love to discover the brothers, but particularly seeking info on Thomas as the there is a trend of serving in the forces down thrpugh the ages. Thanks again for answering my 1st post

Hello Redcap0006,

Your Thomas Quigley served with the 8th Hussars in South Africa. He attested in Dublin on the 03/03/1898. Age 19 years and born in Roscommon.

I have a copy of his Attestation papers and his QSA medal Roll page here, if you would like these please drop me a PM with your email address.

Regards

If you can access the 1901 UK census, it might be worth looking for Mrs Quigley and child in Keighley, and where she was born (Ireland?).

EAST LANCASHIRE (MILITIA) REGIMENT.
....Private Michael Quigley, living at Bartlett's Lodging-house, Keighley, left for the depot at Burnley on Thursday, February 15. Wife and one child.

Berenice,

I think that M Quigley is a different man. He is on the roll with regimental number 7461. He died in South Africa, 13 April 1900, of enteric. That must have been shortly after he arrived.

I cannot see another M Quigley who served during the Boer War.

And, welcome RedCap!
