RedCap,

There is some information on the 8th (Royal Irish) Hussars here: www.angloboerwar.com/unit-information/im...-royal-irish-hussars

T Quigley earned the QSA with clasps CC and OFS.

Many of the 8th Hussars received the KSA but I cannot see his name on the list. His service papers will be able to clarify.

Hi All,

4090 Thomas Quigley only served in SA from the 13/02/1900 until the 19/06/1900. He was discharged unfit for further military duty at home on the 14/04/1901.

Full entitlement for the Boer War is the QSA with CC and OFS clasps.

Regards
Adrian

What a fabulous amount of information for the family of 7461 Pte Quigley M. Regretably, born Blackburn rules out any possibility of him being a brother to T Quigley. Thank you very much for taking the time to post so much informagtion. Am I correct to assume that they were buried where the died?
All very ssad, but, I have found Thomas so overall very pleased. Thanks all.

The reason for discharge is medically unfit. Injury/illness I wonder.
Whats the likelyhood he rejoined, say for ww1?
Thanks Adrian for PM massive amount of information to take in

That would all depend upon the actual reason for his discharge, no injuries are recorded in WO97, being medically unfit for further duty, would normally prevent a potential future engagement,, although, in the particular case of the Great War, many did try, but, you know, he chose a hard path in 1898, he had been a Groom and a fairly typical type of recruit.
Day to day life in the Cavalry was far from an easy one, whilst many were attracted by the colour and sheer magnificence of the uniform, the Sunday church parades were spectacular in the Depot towns, but, it was a hard life.
Add to that any Foreign Service and in this case actual Campaign Service and the ranks begin to reduce and whilst there is no casualty card in his papers it does not exclude him from having been very ill indeed, certainly any underlying issues often came to the fore very quickly in South Africa.
