Thanks for the acceptance. An absolute total novice as regards this period of history. But I have just discovered my Grandad was in the above. L/Cpl 40587 RICHARD ANDERS. So hoping to learn more of events and the person.

Welcome to the forum.
Your Grandfather Richard Anders served in the 144th Company, 32nd Battalion I Y for one year and five days. 245 of those were in South Africa. He was born in St Helen's Lancashire. A labourer by trade, he was 21 years and 11 months when he joined up.
He was 5ft 6 inches tall, Light brown hair, Grey eyes and C of E
His time in S Africa earned him the Queens South Africa Medal with 2 clasps, Cape Colony and the 1902 date clasp. He was discharged in 1903 .

Later today I will upload his service papers and medal roll for you.

He's named on the roll of honour in St Helens' Town Hall.

It's a terrible plaque to try and photograph, partly because of the lighting.

Ray, did he join the police force after the war? I have a mention of a Detective Sergeant Anders in St Helens during WW1.
