The Cape Police and the magistrates were under the Attorney General. Prisons, reformatories and gaols were also under the AG at one time, but were transferred to the Colonial Secretary's ministerial division in the 1890s.

Admin, You guys are stunning, went on to the site you recommended and bingo we found my wife's Great Grand Father Sybrand Johannes Eloff captured at age 17 and sent to Deadwood POW camp St Helene. Concerning insignia: I put your question to the badge collectors' forum, and they say they haven't seen badges to the Tarkastsad Town Guard, which is not to say they didn't exist. If they did exist, they would likely have been made by a jeweller or craftsman from sheet metal, usually brass, probably in the form of the initials TTG. To identify each other, small units [Boer or British] often had a multi-coloured band of cloth around their hat.
