Greetings from Lincolnshire and thanks for your extremely informative and helpful site it's been a wealth of information.

I am currently researching my Great Grandfather and I have questions as well as some gaps in my information.

His name is Joseph Henry Thompson but seems to have left it as Joseph Thompson. He served in the 2nd ILH but it seems he had previously been with the CLH which I read here was actually part of the DEOVR and after going through the site's pages I verified this to a point.

I know that he originally sailed from the UK with horses that he worked with in the UK which makes me suspect that he came to SA with an IY regiment but I have no proof. I also can't seem to find his attestation forms from the ILH as they're only up to the B's on the site.

Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance.

Hello Digger99

Welcome to the forum.
Is this the correct regimental number for your Great Grandfather J H Thompson?

If so, his medal roll for the 2nd Imperial Light Horse notes he served with the 2nd Volunteer Company Royal Scots Fusiliers regimental number 1520.
Any Scottish connection in your family?

Sorry Digger
My mistake, back to the drawing board, Imperial Light Infantry recorded above
Not Imperial Light Horse. Apologies for the error. Will have another look for you.

Regards

Dave

Do these regimental numbers match your research?
Also, could you share your G Grandfather's birth date and where he lived if possible. It may help the forum with additional information.

Thanks Dave, those are the exact regiment numbers that I found here on the site. It matches when I look up his number on the medal roll and it has the Transvaal and Free State clasps on it. That all seems to link up. When I read his name on the ledger, it mentions two regiment numbers in the ILH and on the far left CLH. I can trace his name on their B company as well but that's as far as I can find out. My Mom seems to recall him saying that he was from Hereford where he lived and worked in an Estate stables but I just have no background evidence to support this. We've guaged that he was born in 1885 thanks to the information on his WW1 discharge papers.
