When visiting towns in the UK, it always pays to make time to visit the local museum as you never know what little gems of the Anglo Boer War may be on display.

A recent walk around Trowbridge Museum found a small display dedicated to military material amongst the machinery and displays informing the visitor of the importance of the woollen business to the area.

A small but interesting military exhibition

Boer War medals to two local men

Descriptions of the medals and recipients

1---Major Howard C. Clark

2---1035 Private Frank Mortimer: Wiltshire Regiment

QSA with clasps Cape Colony/Tugela Heights/Relief of Ladysmith/Transvaal/Laing's Nek
KSA with both date clasps
WW1 War and Victory medals.

Frank Mortimer was born in 1864 in the parish of Broughton, near Melksham, Wiltshire.
He attested at Devizes on 29th December 1884 aged 20 years and 3 months and was a Porter by occupation.
He was 5' 7 1/2" in height and weighed 119 lbs. with a chest size 33 1/4".
He was of a fresh complexion, blue eyed and had brown hair. Wesleyan by denomination.
He was promoted Corporal on 22nd May 1889, made up to Sergeant 12th November 1892.
His parents were James and Maria and siblings James and Susan.
Frank married Fanny Holloway during his time in service.

The museum is located within a shopping centre in the centre of the town.

Thank you for that, very interesting. I will visit that museum. Can I ask where did you find all the personal details of the soldier described in your post? was that from the museum exhibit?

Hi Laura,
All of that information came from FindMyPast online. Perhaps the museum could add it to their display for interest?
I hope you enjoy your visit.
