Hi David ( Smethwick)
I couldn't find his attestation papers either. All the information was taken from his desertion paperwork and the India reference was from the remarks column on one of his medal rolls. Examples below, unfortunately difficult to read but can be viewed easier and clearer on Ancestry.

Regards

Dave.....

PS.....I believe he joined his regiment in April 1899. As he was AWOL in Dublin during March 1900 it is likely he went out to South Africa at a later date , he certainly wasn't in the 1st deployment of SWB to S.A

Sorry.......No file uploaded.

The 1st battalion was stationed in Egypt from 1892, then moved to British India. The battalion had various postings, including Peshawar until late 1902 when it was posted to Mian Mir outside Lahore. This was possibly the deployment of your Grandfather after he was moved to the 1st battalion from the 2nd and onto India.

Use the Military option on Ancestry
Type in your Grandfather's name Ernest Tipler
Date of birth, 1881
Conflict date 1900......
Hit search button , that should bring up his desertion paper.

Alternatively, just search by typing in
Ernest Tipler
1881
Peterborough Northamptonshire.

There are family trees, plus military links. Lots of paperwork for his service in WW1 ref Canadian Expeditionary Force.

Good luck.
