Hi all,
It was really interesting to read the valuable information posted recently. I thought I would add to this by
showing a interesting medal. This particular soldier moved around some what from Regiment to Regiment.

I have commenced to do some research on this soldier and would welcome any further info regarding his career.
Medal Named:Rectng-Officer Lieut. P.Bevan: 2nd Kitchneres Fighting Scouts
Q.S.A-Relief of Mafeking
Relief of Ladysmith
Transvaal
1902
I have attached some info regarding his service record, however he served in 4 different units
Imperial Light Horse
Colonial Scouts
Scottish Horse
Kitchener's Fighting Scouts

He was severly wounded serving as a Sergeant in the Scottish Horse on the 25th September 1901,Western Transvaal.Interesting to note he was 35 years old when joining the Imperial Light Horse.
He died in Jhb at the age of 74.
Any further information regarding his service in the other units would be most welcome.
Thanks
Elandslaagte

A superb medal!
He appears to have joined the Colonial Scouts as a Quartermaster Sergt on the 29th December 1899 until the 4th April 1900, then the 1st ILH, on the 19th of April, until the 29th October, with the Scottish Horse from the 10th January 1901 until the 15th July 1901 and then a commission in the 2nd KFS!
All clasps verfied in WO100/250 in respect of his time with the ILH and I have not even looked at the Colonial Scouts roll!
He is on WO100/257 and WO100/269 in respect of the 1901 clasp with his later service in the ScH and KFS
A look in WO126 would be worth doing here in think! Super QSA!
Very best regards Frank

Elandslaagte,

I echo Frank's comments. A absolutely fabulous QSA probably because it is precisely the type I QSA that I look to collect.

I echo the sentiments of Frank and David. Bevan is likely to have been awarded the 'Relief of Ladysmith' clasp for his service with the Colonial Scouts, so he would not have been with the men who rode into the town to end the siege. Nevertheless, this is more than made up for by his later service with three outstanding regiments and his wounding in action.

The 'favourites' in my collection vary according to many factors, not least my passion of the day. However, there are two ILH "double relief" medals that are always near the top of the favourites list. Both have the following clasps:
Relief of Mafeking, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal

The men concerned were:
Captain D F Gilfillan and 166 Trooper L T James

The small number of ILH men who rode into both Ladysmith and Mafeking to end the sieges must have been exhilarated by their double feat. It is one of the inspiring records of the ILH that makes this regiment my favourite.

Hi Brett,
Percy Bevan is on the Imperial Light Horse roll for the Relief of Ladysmith clasp in WO100/250, however, he also has a full page all to himself in WO100/242 page 155 on the Colonial Scouts roll in respect of that clasp, this was only added on the 27th of July 1906 at "The Castle" Capetown and it also confirms him as "Lieut&RO" 2nd KFS.
A really nice medal!
Regards Frank

Hi Frank

It is odd that Bevan was on the ILH roll for the RoL, since he joined the regiment on 19/4/1900 after the siege ended. Critically though, he does not have the 'Tugela Heights' clasp, which is the one that counted to possibly be part of the 28/2/1900 relief force.

Nevertheless, Bevan's QSA is a remarkable one and would be a star in any collection.

Regards
Brett
