Are you sure about that, is not actually 5864?
Regards Frank

Hello Lyn.
I've looked in WO100 for him and his medals are verfied, the QSA in WO100/194 page 220, as Private 5864 with the three clasps you mention and nothing written in the remarks column.
The KSA appears to be in WO100/338 page 140 as Private 5884, have another look at it.
His medals for the Great War are verified on the index card and rolls at Kew and confirm that he was killed in 1914, in addition there are also the entries in Soldiers Died in the Great War and the Commonweath War Graves Commission for him.
During the Anglo Boer War his regt was very active on the western front in the drive to Kimberley, but it all depends on when he actually arrived in South Africa, service papers would give you this information, but as he was killed I would not be hopeful of finding any at Kew, I looked at WO363/364 but could not see him.
Regards Frank.

Hello Lyn

His pre-WW1 service papers do survive on WO97 - www.findmypast.co.uk . There are also a set of militia papers - WO96.

As Frank said earlier this should not be the case as he served in WW1 but happily these exceptions occur.

The service number shown is 5884 which I would take as correct.

He served in SA from September 1900 to October 1902.

It is not easy to determine the battles he served in because he only got "state" bars. You will need to read around on the activities of the KOYLI.
