Firstly well done on this awesome website. I know how much work it takes to find the information and keep your web page current and interesting. So well done.

I'm a keen researcher myself and is currently working on a project investigating my grandfathers birth during the Anglo Boer War on the 18/07/1901 in Aliwal North. This is a grey zone to me even though I've read up quite a lot on the Anglo Boer War.

My question to the forum is = was there any German soldiers stationed at Aliwal North between August 1900 to end of 1901 and if so where can I obtain names on them, their ranks etc..

Truly appreciate it.

Hello Lindi and welcome to this forum,
When you say "German soldiers" could you clarify that, are you talking about members of the Imperial German army? both the Boer forces and the SAMIF had German nationals serving in their ranks, there was a German Commando, attached to the Transvaal forces for example.

Morning Frank and thank you for your response. When I refer to German soldiers, I'm trying to establish which 'division' was stationed at Aliwal North supporting the British either overseeing the camp/giving support to the town for defence against the Boers. Hope this makes sense as I'm following a 'lead' and unfortunately have very little information.

Hello Linda.....

I am in the same boat as Frank..... There were no organized German Troops (Division) fighting with the British during the BW but there was the odd German citizen that fought on both sides.....

Morning Mike, thank for your response. This helps me alot because I can narrow it down now to civilians residing in and around Aliwal North. Any suggestions how to obtain information on residence residing in the town leading up to the ABW.

Many thanks

Lindi,
Aliwal North was quite important during the ABO, many men passed through it in the course of the war, some units such as Driscoll's Scouts were raised there and had depots there.
It also raised its own local force to defend its self and it was also the site of a concentration camp, perhaps if you have the name in mind of the person/persons you are looking for?
