Hello Henk,
Another superb ABO, he is shown in their nominal roll, number 544, I have to say that I am more than a little green with envy, it was years before I realised just how rare these medals actually are, I have read various old copies of "Commando" magazine, Davitt's "The Boer Fight for Freedom, Breytenbach's Die Geskiedenis van Tweede Vryheidsoorlog etc!
I have to say that it is those who played it out to the bitter end that I admire to most though and yes, I agree, a "Republican and Free State Foreign Volunteer" topic would be a great idea.
However, I don't think I could add much to it though!
and we really should not hijack other peoples topics, sorry Lindi!
Very best regards again Frank

Hi Frank
I noticed your attachment of the German Commando Nominal Roll (ex SA Archives Yearbook 1951 Vol II): glad to see that you read Afrikaans. This ability opens many new research avenues.
I append a scan of the ABO to Commandant Fritz Schultz, German Commando. He has only a fleeting reference in the above publication, but he is mentioned twice in the "Times History" (24 Aug 1900) and Schikkerling, in "Commando Courageous", has a number of references to him. He mentions him a few times for the action on 26 Aug 1900 and under the date Oct 15, 1901, he notes "our Assistant-Fieldcornet Shultz" and elaborates : "Shultz, who fought at the battle of Dalmanutha, is a fearless and capable man. He is one of the few under our general who is capable of leading us, and for soldierly qualities has few equals in our ranks..........Though he was at one time commandant of the German Corps, he humbled himself to assistant-fieldcornet to help us along".
Henk
PS Maybe we can open a Topic on "Foreign Volunteers in the Boer War"????
