Just wondering, does anyone know roughly how many QSA medals were issued that had the ghost dates faintly visible?

Hi Neil,
A link to the QSA
www.angloboerwar.com/medals-and-awards/b...s-south-africa-medal
I would think the exact number of "ghost dated" examples would be hard to calculate but they do seem to be quite frequently found.

Ok thanks Coldstream. Was just curious as the two QSA medals I have both have the ghost dates.

Hello Neil.....

Welcome to the forum.....

I remember reading an article on another of the forums but I will be damn'd if I can find it now about a report from the Royal Mint on the number of medals that were re-struck to remove the dates and in doing so crate the Ghost Date medals.....

If me memory serves me right there were between 50,000 and 70,000 medals re-struck but don't quote me on that.....

May be more but certainly not less....

I was hoping that British Battles and Medals would shed some light, but no luck. I expect one needs to consult the Royal Mint records. I poked about a bit and came up with MINT 16/108 at the National Archives online , but I suspect that the cross-referenced MINT 20/13 & 17 require consultation as well. I suspect the other file referenced, MINT 20/198, pertains to the KSA and '01/'02 QSA clasps. Just an educated guess there.

Almost all the QSA's in my collection were issued to soldiers in South African units and none has 'ghost dates'. I have seen a few in other collections and they were named to men in British units.

I have presumed that this is because Colonials, or, more specifically, South Africans, received their medals later than those issued to British units.
