Howzit Brett

Just checked my collection and found 3 with erased dates to Colonials:

Tpr R.S. Clieveley Imperial Light Horse issued 12/2/1903

Tpr A.C.J.H. Langston Kitcheners Horse, Prisoner near Paardeberg 18/2/1900, released and died Netley Hospital, England 25/9/1900. Issued 20/11/1903

Tpr G. Howard, Imperial Light Horse, Killed Wagon Hill 6/1/1900, issued 2/2/1903

I agree that most erased dates are to Imperial troops, and looking at other QSAs it would seem that it was the luck of the draw, several other ILH men on the same roll in my collection received the normal 3rd type issue.

does any body know of a way to artificially enhance these erased dates? I notice on a tarnished QSA to the ASC in my collection the dates stand out quite clearly but disappear once cleaned.

Would love to afford a proper raised dates QSA but way out of my budget.

Thank you for correcting my misapprehension. Those are great medals in your collection, especially that of Trooper Howard.

Mike

You know how to make other collectors envious!

I read somewhere some time ago that approximately a third of all QSAs issued had ghost dates, making them very common. I have many examples in my collection.

It's an old bugbear of mine when I see in dealers' lists QSAs highlighted as "with ghost dates" or "clear ghost dates" as if it's a rarity, especially when a premium has been added to the price. Ghost dates are nothing more than a mild curiosity and add nothing to the value of a medal.

On the other hand raised dates are another matter entirely...

Could not agree with you more about ghost dates, suspect it is just another ploy by dealers/auction house to squeese a few more hard earned pounds out of the collector.
