There were 18 silver medals issued for the Defence of O'okiep.

One is going under the hammer at Bonhams next week. Estimate is £4k - £6k.

This example was awarded to Dr R. N. Howard.

Dr Ronald Nesbit Howard M.R.C.S. Eng and L.S.A. 1880; L.R.C.P. Edin 1880; (St.Mary's); Fellow of the Royal Microscopy Society; Member of the South African Philospohy Society Society; Quekett Microscopy Club and British Medical Association. Served as Chief Medical Officer of the Cape Copper Company; late Medical Officer in charge of Troops at Ookiep and District Surgeon Namaqualand and Port Nolloth.

Dr Howard appeared in Colonel H.Cooper's despatch of the 4th June 1902 "Of the Civilians I wish to bring to notice" where he states Dr Howard's professional requirements and long local experience has been of great assistance to the Military Medical Officers."
