Hi Adrian, and anyone else who might be able to give me some advice,

As I mentioned earlier, I have a 1906 Natal medal that has a rich patina, making it look more like a bronze medal than silver.

I intend displaying this medal, so do I leave it as it is, or should I clean it? If I decide to clean it, what would be the safest way, without damaging the medal?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Klaus

Klaus,

It is entirely up to you whether you clean the medal or not. I like many collectors would rather leave the medal as it is.

Using silver cleaner normally removes fine particules of the silver and over time the medal will become worn, just a thought.

Good Morning Klaus.....

I personally like to polish as a Sergeant Major would never let you go on parade with dirty medals.....

I use a polish called Flitz, instead of having a grit as a matrix it uses small pieces of fiberglass and does not scratch the medal......

Thanks guys,

One for and one against cleaning.

That does not help me decide what to do.

There is a coin dip available for silver coins. Would this not work for silver medals? At least there would be no rubbing or polishing involved.

Klaus......

Yes that is OK just wash very well with soap and water and with a very soft tooth brush to get the acid off the medal after taking out of dip.....
