Hi, I'm new to this site. I came across it while researching a 1906 Natal Rebellion medal that has been in my wife's family all these years. It was issued to her step grandfather.
I see you have a list of recipients for this medal. Is it a complete list or do you add on as you get more information?
More about our medal: It has a very rich patina, a very dark brown. In fact, I originally thought it was made of copper, until I found out that all these medals were made of silver. Apart from the coloring, it is in excellent condition. It has no bar, and the ribbon must have disappeared a long time ago. The inscription on the edge: TPR. H.C. OELLERMANN, NEW HANOVER RES.

If you could find out any more about trooper Oellermann, it would be greatly appreciated.

One more thing. At the top of the page it says I last visited on 30 November 1999. That is impossible.

H C Oellermann is on the medal roll for the New Hanover Reserves. He is one of eight Oellermanns on this list.

The New Hanover Reserves was made up of 75 men, all of whom received the Rebellion Medal without the 1906 clasp. This indicates that the men served for between 20 and 50 days. The clasp went to those who served for more than 50 days.

There are bound to be many Oellermann files in the Pietermaritzburg Repository of the SA National Archives. The description of these files can be accessed through the SANA website, but will have to be copied by an on-site researcher.

Thanks for the info. I already knew that H.C. Oellermann was part of the New Hanover Reserves. What I did not know was that there were so many Oellermanns in the same group (regiment?). According to the roll, there were 10 with the name Oellermann, out of a group of 75 men. I know that the Oellermanns settled in Natal, but this is extaordinary. I wonder if they were all related.

As I mentioned in my introductory message, the ribbon for my 1906 Natal medal is missing. How hard would it be to get hold of one? I intend displaying this medal together with the 1914-1918 German Cross of Honour that I have (also from a member on my wife's side of the family).
