Greetings again. I remain in search of background details of my grandfather's service in South Africa - Sgt/Lt/Capt Stephen Midgley MID DSO 2nd Queensland Mounted Infantry, Bushveldt Carbineers/Pietersburg Light Horse during the Anglo-Boer War and Royston's Horse during the Bambatha Rebellion. A small contingent from the PLF took part in the coronation parade for King Edward in London on 09 August 1902. Has anyone from the forum located a list of names of soldiers from South African units who marched in that parade? Grateful for your thoughts

Stephen
There is a list of the SA members who received the 1902 Coronation medal on this site under that particular heading. There is no Capt. Midgeley of the PLH on that list.
Attached is a screen shot; sorry it did not come out better!

Regards
IL.

Hi Stephen,
I've had no luck either in finding any connection with your Grandfather with the Coronation of Edward VII in 1902.

The Second Contingent Service Roll shows that Stephen Midgley had taken the Oath of Allegiance to the Defence Force for Special Service in South Africa on the 3rd January 1900. His date of commencement was on the 28th December 1899 as a Private (No. 22) and was aged 28 years and 6 mths with a height of 5 foot 7½ inches and a chest measurement of 33½-36" and listed as single. Private Midgley was appointed Sergeant on board the Maori King for the Contingent, dated 6th January 1900.

Previous service listed as 3 years with the QVR - Queensland Volunteer Rifles, 3 years with the QPA - Queensland Permanent Artillery, 3 years with No.2 FB - No. 2 Field Battery and 1 year with (I'm winging this), BPB?.

I'll keep having a look around and let you know what else that I can find.

Trev

Thank you. In 1917 grandfather received his CMG at Buckingham Palace. he told his son (my father) that this was the second time that he had visited the palace. I have been trying to find when the first time might have been. Thanks again.

Most likely when he was invested with the DSO.
