For those with deep pockets, the Liverpool Medal Co has a raised dates QSA to Lord Strathcona' Horse; a snip at Stg4995. They also have an undated example at substantially less.

The write up says:

Queen’s South Africa, 5 bars, Natal, Orange Free State, Belfast, SA 1901, SA 1902, Private P.E. Simpson, Lord Strathconas Horse, original raised dates reverse. Peter Edwards Simpson enlisted at the age of 34, being a Mechanical Engineer by trade, he served with ‘C’ Squadron Troop 2, as a Batman, one of 4 in the troop. He was one of the few early arrivals to the war with the LSH, he came from Wellington, Ontario, enlisting February 8th 1900. This small cavalry unit consisted of only 537 officers and men, they consisted of skilled horsemen mostly Cowboys, Frontiersmen and Men of the North-West Mounted Police who could be deployed after only short training to be rapidly deployed to combat. They arrived early on in the conflict on 10th April form Halifax with the Royal Canadian Dragoons and were involved in many skirmishes and bloody battles against the Boer mounted riflemen. They were renowned scouts and highly regarded by the British Army and considered essential. After returning form the war they met Lord Strathcona and were personally handed their medals by King Edward who also presented the King’s Colours to the regiment. He was discharged as The LSH was disbanded 8th March 1901. Private Simpson didn’t seem content serving this short but intense period, aged 38 he re-enlisted with the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles and returned to South Africa, earning his final two clasps with them. with full comprehensive service papers including service details and correspondences. Of the highest rarity and one of only a select few extant raised date medals.

Mike,

I thought £5,000 was quite a high price for a raised date QSA. What do you reckon is the going rate?

Mike,

I hadn't recorded Simpson's medal before. Do you have more than the 56 recipients (now 57) listed here: angloboerwar.com/medals-and-awards/briti...al-with-raised-dates

Best wishes
David

Hi David.....

I know of 2 that have sold in private sales....

One went for $6500.00 and the other which had a number of other things with it, i.e. his Cap Badge, Wedge Cap, Gloves, Holster, Photos etc. went for $8000.00, now this was 2 to 2 1/2 years ago.....

The exchange rate as of today is 3500 and 4400 Pounds so maybe 5000 is a bit much....
