I hadn't recorded Simpson's medal before. Do you have more than the 56 recipients (now 57) listed here: angloboerwar.com/medals-and-awards/briti...al-with-raised-dates

Best wishes
David

David.....

I went through my list and checked it against yours and found the following:

1) 387 Cameron. M.C.J. is on the roll as 178 Cameron, N.C.J.

the number 387 is for Sgt. T. F. Miller.....

the numbers are the same when you include Simpson's.....

2) There are 2 others which I include in my list that you do not have.....

Both medals are Un-Named, one has all of the bars as awarded to the Strathcona's and the other has no bars.... The medals were issued with no bars and they were sent on later....

There has been a lot of talk about these two and I think that the Regiment was given a number of Un-Named medals which were issued to people who left the unit before the presentation in England and came home to Canada, England or left the Regiment for one reason or another.... I have talked to various Regimental historians about this and they agree that it is possible and one piece of evidence is from the units Routine Orders.....

And I quote:

S.S. Numidian
February 28th, 1901

#2 - MEDALS

Squadron Officers will hand in to the Orderly Room early to-morrow morning a roll of the men of their Squadron on board who have not received their war medals.

If the medals had been named they would have said:

Corporal So and So and Private So and So will report to the Orderly Room to pick up their medals etc.....

One medal is in My Collection and the other is in a collection in South Africa....

Which would make the total 59 which is the total that I go by.....

Hello Mike

Simpson's medal has just turned up at Liverpool medals for £4995.

A tidy profit there.

I checked the LMC site yesterday and the raised date QSA is marked as "sold". That certainly sets a benchmark.

Ian,

I'm a little surprised but, as you say, its certainly a new benchmark the these QSAs.

Gentlemen,
I think that is rather expensive even by todays standards!
