MID London Gazette 10 September 1901.

John Charles Sarle Irving was born in Greenwich on 24 March 1843, and was educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was commissioned Ensign in the 18th Regiment of Foot on 7 April 1863, and was promoted Lieutenant in 1867. He was appointed Instructor of Musketry with the 39th Foot in 1878, and was promoted Captain in the 102nd Royal Madras Fusilier (later Royal Dublin Fusiliers) on 4 September 1880. He was appointed Paymaster in the Army Pay Department in 1886, and was promoted Major on 30 May 1896, and Lieutenant Colonel on 6 October 1899. He served with the Army Pay Department in South Africa during the Boer War, and was Mentioned in Despatches. He retired due to ill health in 1903, and died at Folkestone on 29 November 1914.

James Hepburn was born in Gateshead-on-Tyne on 7 August 1877 and attested for the King’s Own Scottish Borderers at Berwick-on-Tweed on 7 November 1895. He transferred to the Army Pay Corps on 30 November 1897 and was promoted Corporal on 30 November 1898. He served with them in South Africa during the Boer War from 7 March 1900, and was promoted Sergeant on 30 November 1903; Staff Sergeant on 14 February 1906; Staff Quartermaster Sergeant on 14 February 1909; and Staff Sergeant Major on 30 May 1913. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order of 1914, and served during the Great War at the Harve Base APD. Unit from 18 August 1914. Commissioned Honorary Lieutenant as an Assistant Paymaster in the Army Pay Department on 12 February 1915, he was promoted Captain on 12 February 1918, and Major on 12 February 1930. He retired on 1 March 1944, and having emigrated post-War to Jersey, he died in Jersey of mushroom poisoning on 16 September 1948.

Hans George was born in Shankhill, Belfast on 19 January 1858, and enlisted into the Royal Munster Fusiliers on 19 January 1876, aged 18 years. Having reached the rank of Colour Sergeant in July 1882, he was appointed Paymaster Sergeant in September 1882 and transferred to the Army Pay Corps on its formation on 1 April 1883. Promoted Staff Sergeant Major on 14 March 1894, he served with the Corps during the Boer War in South Africa between 20 October 1899 and 10 April 1901, and was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 8 February 1901). He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in July 1894 and the Meritorious Service Medal with an annuity of £5 on 8 May 1901. He was appointed to the Yeomen of the Guard in 1908 and received the Coronation Medal in 1911.

He died on 11 July 1921.

Harry Balls was born in Earsham, Norfolk, on 5 December 1863 and attested for the Norfolk Regiment at Norwich on 20 April 1885. Promoted Corporal on 6 October 1886, and Paymaster Sergeant on 1 November 1887, he transferred to the Corps of Military Staff Clerks on 15 January 1891, and then to the Army Pay Corps on its formation on 1 April 1893. Promoted Staff Quartermaster Sergeant on 13 April 1894, he served with the Army Pay Corps in South Africa during the Boer War from 20 October 1899, and for his services in South Africa was twice Mentioned in Despatches, first by Lord Roberts (London Gazette 10 September 1901), and then by Lord Kitchener (London Gazette 29 July 1902). Promoted Staff Sergeant Major on 1 April 1903, he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order 75 of 1904.

Balls served at home throughout the Great War (and consequently was not entitled to any Great War medals), and transferred to the Royal Air Force as a founder member on 1 April 1918. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant and temporary Lieutenant on 1 June 1918, and was employed at the RAF Central Pay Office. Promoted Flying Officer (Administration Branch) on 1 December 1919, he relinquished his commission on 19 September 1922

William Henry Hooper was born in Blandford, Dorset, on 18 September 1860 and attested for the Cheshire Regiment at Birmingham on 18 June 1883. Promoted Sergeant on 11 May 1886, he was appointed Paymaster Sergeant on 23 February 1887, and Quartermaster Sergeant on 11 May 1892. he joined the Corps of Military Staff Clerks on 8 November 1892, and transferred to the Army Pay Corps on its formation on 1 April 1893. He served with the Army Pay Corps in South Africa during the Boer War, and was promoted Staff Sergeant Major on 1 April 1901. Mentioned in Lord Kitchener’s Despatch of 23 June 1902 (London Gazette 29 July 1902), he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal that same year per Army Order 235, and returned to England on 18 December 1902. He saw further service at home during the Great War, ands was finally discharged on 30 June 1917, after 34 years and 13 days’ service.

He died at Carshalton, Surrey, on 26 January 1938.

Walter Ernest Burgg was born in Mooltan, India, on 24 August 1875 and attested for the Royal Artillery at Woolwich on 20 September 1889, aged 14. He transferred to the Army Pay Corps on 31 October 1893, and was promoted Corporal on 1 November 1894, and Sergeant on 1 November 1899. He served with the Army Pay Corps in South Africa during the Boer War from 2 November 1899, and was promoted Staff Sergeant on 1 April 1902. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order 77 of 1908, and was promoted Staff Quartermaster Sergeant on 1 September 1914. He served at home during the Great War and was discharged at Aldershot on 19 September 1917, after 28 years’ service. He died in Aldershot on 17 January 1945, whilst employed as a Civil Service Clerk.
