Charles Francis Grimshaw was born in Barking on 15 December 1877 and attested for the Essex Regiment on 27 November 1895, having previously served in the Essex Militia. Promoted Corporal on 2 December 1898, he transferred to the Army Pay Corps on 31 July 1899, and served with them in South Africa from 16 November 1901.

Advanced Staff Quartermaster Sergeant on 27 August 1911, he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order 99 of 1914, and was promoted Staff Sergeant Major on 17 July 1916. He was commissioned Lieutenant as an Assistant Paymaster in the Army Pay Department on 17 June 1918, and was promoted Captain on 17 June 1926. Appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1932 Birthday Honours’ List, he was promoted Major on 17 June 1933, and having been awarded both the 1935 Jubilee Medal and the 1937 Coronation Medal, retired on 11 August 1937.

He died at Newport, Isle of Wight, on 3 August 1956.

Charles Francis Hartshorne Beardmore was born on 27 February 1850 and was commissioned Lieutenant in the 1st Royal Tower Hamlets (King’s Own Light Infantry) Militia on 1 September 1871. He served during the Ashantee campaign as a Sub-Assistant Commissary, where he commanded 60 native labourers who formed the ambulance for the Gold Coast; was present in the action at Essaman, 14 October 1873, and the battle of Amoaful, 31 January 1874; and was Mentioned in Despatches for the former action (London Gazette 18 November 1873). He was awarded his Royal Humane Society Bronze Medal for saving life of a native coolie who was drowning in the Okee River, on the Gold Coast, 9 November 1873 (RHS.Case No. 19579).

Promoted Captain on 5 September 1877, Beardmore was commissioned Assistant Paymaster on 28 September of that year, and promoted Paymaster on 1 April 1884. Granted the honorary rank of Major on 1 April 1894, he was advanced to Staff Paymaster on 5 September 1898, and served with the Army Pay Department in South Africa during the Boer War. Promoted Lieutenant-Colonel on 5 September 1903, he retired on 2 October 1907.

Seymour Sackville Carew Dolby was born in London on 17 January 1851 and was educated at Eton. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders on 24 July 1872, and was promoted Lieutenant on 24 July 1873, and Captain on 11 May 1880. He transferred to the Army Pay Department on 14 February 1882, and was posted as Paymaster to the 1st Battalion, Coldstream Guards, on 13 February 1885, being posted to the Sudan with them on 19 February 1885. He transferred to the 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders, on 19 July 1885, before being posted back to England in September 1885, and was attached to the 1st Battalion, Royal West Surrey Regiment from 26 October 1885.

Promoted Major on 14 November 1891, Dolby was posted to join the Ashanti Expedition in 1895, ands was one of only 3 officers of the Army Pay Department to qualify for the Ashanti Star. Appointed Staff Paymaster on 27 December 1896, he saw further in South Africa during the Boer War, and was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel on 27 December 1901. Remaining in South Africa following the cessation of hostilities, he was promoted Colonel and Chief Paymaster on 19 October 1904, before returning to England on 16 April 1905, and retired on 17 January 1911. He died on 27 March 1921.

A keen badminton player, Dolby served as Secretary of the Southsea Badminton Club, and in 1893 convened a meeting of all known English Badminton Clubs (many of which had their own rules) in order to standardise the rules of the game; the meeting resulted in the formation of the English Badminton Association, with Dolby elected as the Honorary Secretary and Treasurer. For his services to the sport he was appointed on the the Inaugural Members of the International Badminton Federation Hall of Fame on its founding in 1996.

William John Cryer was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, on 5 February 1871 and was educated at the Royal Hibernian Military School. He attested for the Norfolk Regiment as a Boy solider on 5 May 1885, and served with the 2nd Battalion in India from September 1886, seeing active service during the Burmese campaign in 1888. Returning to the U.K. in March 1890, he transferred to the Army Pay Corps in August 1892, and saw active service with them in South Africa during the Boer War from January 1901. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order 172 of 1903. Advanced Staff Sergeant Major on 18 January 1908, he was commissioned Lieutenant in the Army Pay Department on 23 Mach 1913, and served as an Assistant Paymaster during the Great War on the Western Front from 15 February 1916. Promoted Captain on 1 July 1917,for his services during the Great War he was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 30 December 1918). Promoted Major on 24 May 1928, he retired having reached the age limit on 5 February 1931, and died in Hove on 3 October 1933.

Gervase Gilham Hewlett was born in Egham, Surrey, on 23 August 1869 and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Leicestershire Regiment on 6 March 1889. He was promoted Lieutenant on 25 February 1891 before transferring to the Army Service Corps on 15 May that same year. Promoted Captain on 1 April 1895, he transferred to the Army Pay Department as Paymaster on 20 January 1898, and served with them in South Africa throughout the Boer War. Promoted Major and Staff Paymaster on 11 March 1907, and Lieutenant-Colonel on 11 March 1912, he retired on 4 July 1919, and died in Bournemouth on 10 September 1953.

Ernest Campbell Eicke was born in Paddington, London, on 27 December 1859 and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Essex Rifles Militia on 24 November 1877. He transferred to the Regular Army as Second Lieutenant in the Wiltshire Regiment on 23 April 1881, and was promoted Lieutenant on 1 July 1881, and Captain on 11 June 1890. He transferred to the Army Pay Department as Paymaster and Honorary Captain on 5 January 1893, and was promoted Major on 29 November 1900. He served in South Africa throughout the Boer War, and was Mention in Despatches (London Gazette 16 April 1901). Advanced Lieutenant-Colonel on 29 November 1905, he retired on 1 February 1917, and died in Greenwich on 29 March 1918.
