Hi,

His QSA is still around. It was sold by Sotheby's in 1995.

The description of the medal says:

Queen's South Africa Medal, 1899, Sto. J. Aughton, H.M.S. Terrible, 2 clasps, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, slight contact wear and polished, otherwise very fine E200-300 Stoker J. Aughton is confirmed in George Crowe's book, The Commission of H.M.S. Terrible, as having been one of seven men who served in the Searchlight Train with the Ladysmith Relief Column; sold with medal verification and copy photographs, the former confirming further entitlement to the 'Third China Medal.

It would be nice if the copy photographs were of him.

Good luck in tracing this and please let us know how you get on.

Best wishes
David

Hi David
thank you for all that information. We have never seen a photograph of James Aughton. He obviously paid a big part in the war.
regards

Mary,

If you contact Sotheby's in London, they may forward a letter from you to the purchaser (if they still have the information) as you are a family member.

Might be worthwhile.

I have certainly heard of some people following this process successfully so I hope you are successful too.

Fingers crossed indeed.
