DCM LG 31 October 1902.

Herbert Dandy was born in Warrington, Lancashire, in 1878, and attested for the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment at Chester on 6 January 1897. Posted to the 2nd Battalion, he served with the Mounted Infantry in Malta from 2 October to 17 December 1900, and with the Regiment in South Africa from 5 January 1901 until 16 September 1902, transferring to the 1st Battalion on 1 September 1901. Promoted Corporal on 30 November 1901, for his gallantry in South Africa he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, together with a gratuity of £20 payable on discharge or transfer to the Army Reserve. Appointed Lance-Sergeant on 1 December 1902, he transferred to the Army Reserve on 12 November 1904, and was discharged on 5 January 1909, after 12 years’ service.

The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment were awarded 17 DCMs for the Boer War, of which 5 were to the Mounted Infantry.

Seen on Ebay.Aus is the below pictured group to 2309 Sergt W.F.Tobin Royal Warwick Regt-it appears to have had a bit of a rough life.

Thanks David - fool them for not displaying the name on their stand. I have been following Vine for many years as he later served with the Swaziland Police. His DCM is one of the "unloved", with prices varying from GBP4200 in 2004 to GBP2900 (hammer) in 2008, GBP1900 (hammer) in 2016 and GBP3950 in January this year.

The LG announced the DCM under CIV, but the medal is named to SAC. Additionally there is no citation, so it could be an award for continued good work and not gallantry.

Interesting to see where it goes next.

DCM LG 31 October 1902.

Abraham Curdie was born in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, in 1866, and attested for the Royal Scots Fusiliers at Ayr on 28 December 1885. He served with the Regiment in India from December 1888 until January 1894, and transferred to the Army Reserve at the end of the latter month. He was recalled to the Colours on the outbreak of the Boer War on 6 December 1899, and served with the Regiment in South Africa from 21 December 1899 until 5 September 1902. He was discharged on 13 September 1902, after 16 years and 262 days’ service.

Curdie re-attested for General Service on the outbreak of the Great War on 12 December 1914 and was posted to the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He served with the 2nd Battalion on the Western Front from 19 January 1915 (entitled to a 1914-15 Star trio), and served continuously in France until 2 March 1919. He was transferred to Class “Z” Reserve on 1 April 1919, after a further 4 years and 111 days’ service.
